Built as a Girls School in 1860 makes this one of Nelson’s oldest buildings and only the second School of its type in New Zealand. Although it’s been added to over the years and housed various Government departments and small businesses, it’s kept its original charm which helps it stand out in photos from over a 150 years ago!
It’s also located in the Albion Historic Reserve which houses other buildings from the same era and includes the Queens Gardens which are only a 1 minute walk away. The recent renovation / re-development has a modern interior with all the mod cons you would expect from a brand new property while the Heritage category 1 exterior maintains its unique character.
We’ve left a few ‘special finds’ within the School House for you to re-discover and an original wall from the school now does double duty as a chance for guests to leave their own bit of history.
Take a moment to get old school (excuse the pun), write a postcard to friends, and post it in New Zealand’s oldest operational Post Box located just outside the door! We’ll even supply the post cards.
We’ve documented the restoration and development of this building which you can see on our Facebook page.
